Presentation
Pierre-Yves Trouillet is a Social Geographer. He holds a PhD from the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne (2010), and he has been a permanent Research Fellow at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) since 2012 ("Passages" Research Institute, Bordeaux). He is also an associate member of the Paris-based Centre for South Asian Studies (CEIAS-CNRS/EHESS), where he was statutory member between 2012 and 2017, and an editorial board member of the South Asia Multidisciplinary Academic Journal (SAMAJ).
His research focuses on the relationships between religion, society and space on the basis of fieldwork conducted in South India (Tamil Nadu) and in several Tamil immigration countries (Mauritius, Canada, France). He is more specifically interested in popular Hinduism in Tamil context, and in the relations between the practices and transformations of ritual spaces and the dynamics of their social backgrounds.
Pierre's work began with a PhD research project focused on the worship of a South Indian god (Murukaṉ), first conducted in Tamil Nadu for several years, then in the Creole context of Mauritius. His post-doctoral activities then adressed the role played by Hindu temples and their trusts in the development of villages and towns in South India.
His current scientific activities focus on religious boundaries and mobilities, studied from two perspectives: 1/ the notions of ‘migrant priest’ and of ‘migratory taboo’, on the basis of fieldwork conducted alongside Indian and Sri Lankan Brahman priests (Sivâchâryas) working in Hindu temples of the Tamil diaspora (in Mauritius and Toronto); and 2/ the sharing of places of worship between Hindus, Christians and Muslims in South India and in the Tamil diaspora.
