The Political Significance of the Mayawati Phenomenon. New Indian Problematics: The Accession to Power of a ‘Dalit’ Leader
Kumari Mayawati is the first dalit woman—i.e. from an untouchable background—with the avowed goal of becoming Prime Minister of India. She is currently the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous State of the Union, and is in this office for the 4th time, having led the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to victory.
Given her socio-economic identity, her political career is unprecedented in the history of India. A dalit woman, she combines characteristics that are traditionally judged to be handicaps in Indian society. Her career is however to be understood in the context of a long process of transformation, marked by the historic emancipation of the dalits.
Our study will focus on the strategy to gain regional then national power implemented by this politician who presents herself as the descendant of a political line beginning with Ambedkar, the dalit “father” of the Indian Constitution and continuing on to Kanshi Ram, the founder of the BSP. The instrumentalization of the collective imaginary associated with her status as a dalit woman will be analyzed in order to understand how Mayawati has managed to become a dominant figure in the national political arena.
