Cinematographic Circulation between India and the Middle East: Distribution Networks, Dynamics of Exchange and Hybridization
While it is a well-known fact that Indian films are present in the Arab world, this phenomenon is still not often studied. In Lebanon, before the war of 1975, Indian films were distributed in theaters, and they could be rented or purchased from VHS tape stores. In the 1980s, the Egyptian working classes found in Amitabh Bachchan a hero who resonated with their own aspirations, while the Gulf states appreciated this cinema and its musical interludes. Starting in the 1990s, for structural and political reasons, Indian films disappeared little by little from theaters, until the arrival of cable television channels introduced them back into the heart of people’s homes.
This research project proposes an ethnography of the distribution of Bombay-industry films in Beirut, Cairo and Dubai; but it also seeks to understand the cultural reasons behind the enthusiasm and loss of interest in Bollywood, and its influence on the musical industry of the Arab world as well as on its visual productions.
