The Construction of Socio-Musical Networks in Tajikistan. Anthropological Approach of Social Dynamics

This research deals with the social dynamics at work in the musical culture of Tajikistan, and to a lesser extent in that of Iran and Afghanistan. I chose to conduct, using a multidisciplinary approach that draws on history and ethnomusicology, an anthropological analysis of the social logics impacting the musical understanding of classical and folk repertoires. More specifically, my thesis aims at shedding light on how social networks function in these musical cultures, and on how the contextual representation of a type of music influences the social status of the musician, through fluctuating cultural schemes. Connections and interactions between the different social criteria (through the concept of style, or musical instrument status, for example), which can be applied to one musical repertoire, or to others, and may or may not concern the musician, deserve study: how is music social? The aim of my research is also to consider the social logics at work in musical thought and creation.
