Producing, Reproducing and Governing Informal Work: The Everyday Politics of Construction Workers in Ranchi, Jharkhand
I propose a critical approach to the notion of informal work through a broader socio-historical perspective on the evolution of work systems in central India since independence, in relation to the agrarian situation and the transformations of the construction sector. Through the consideration of the implementation of a social security program for construction workers, I seek to examine the new relationships established with the state and particularly the role of political mediators in the access to its resources. Finally, through extended attention to residential neighborhoods and hostels, I observe the transformations in the survival and reproduction strategies employed by the workers.
