Saiyid Ahmad Khan and his followers have often been classified as modernist or modernizers among the South Asian Muslims. There has been a lot of debate about the analytical category on modernity in the last decades – but irrespective of whether we want to continue using it or not, the historical actors were intensely aware of living in a period of tremendous changes.

My talk will investigate the concepts and vocabulary used in Urdu Journals to talk about these changes. What language is used to debate about the challenges of the present, the needs of the future and how to draw on the past? What emotions are evoked by this language, and what are the new feeling rules required?

The dialogue with colleagues from literature and language, that this presentation hopes to open, may hopefully allow us together in the discussion to further diversify this picture from the prose texts in journals to include novels and poetry.
