The ninth-century CE Netra Tantra contains the most detailed and sustained explanation for the workings of the “evil eye” (dṛṣṭi-pāta) recorded anywhere in the Hindu canon. The terminology employed by the Netra reprises that found in earlier Buddhist demonological works, which had been circulating in Bactria, Gandhara, Sogdiana and East Asia from as early as the third century CE. Even today, cognate forms of this demonological terminology are attested in modern Indo-Aryan and Perso-Arabic languages from the northwest of the Indian subcontinent and beyond. As for the Netra’s optics of the evil eye, this appears to have been directly or indirectly inspired by late antique Greek accounts of the same, as attested in the works of Plutarch (ca. 100 CE) and other authors. In this paper, I attempt to retrace the path by which this tradition was carried to Kashmir via Sasanian Persia. I also argue that the tantric technique of “mirror divination” (prasenā) was imported into South Asia from the Hellenistic world, again via Sasanian Persia, in the same period.
