Insular Spaces of the Indian Ocean: Indianity and Creolity
Coordinators: Mathieu Claveyrolas (CEIAS), Julie Peghini (CEMTI), Catherine Servan-Schreiber (CEIAS)
Aimed at students and researchers, this workshop is a follow-up on the discussions on the linkages between Indianity and Creolity in the Indian Ocean that have given rise to several major research groups and publications in recent years. It will be more specifically focused on Mauritius, Reunion Island and Madagascar, while still remaining open to comparative perspectives within South Asia, on the one hand, and other Creole societies (from the Caribbean, in particular), on the other.
All disciplinary approaches (anthropology, geography, history, literature) are of interest to us. The multiple forms of territories and circulation, artistic productions, the political dynamics of domination and resistance, the relationship to the past and to memory, and the plurality of religious phenomena will all be discussed.
