Social Tradition or Organization and Tolerance: A Case Study of Baba Ramdejvi in Tando Allahyar, Sindh (Pakistan)

Baba Ramdevji is one of the most important historical characters of Sindh, Pakistan. His personality and teachings have had deep influence on the Hindus and Muslims of Sindh, which can be observed in the social expressions of traditions, customs and music. There are divided views regarding the origin and identity of Baba Ramdevji because of the gap of knowledge in this regard. Historical discussions about him are mostly based on oral narrations and very little written work can be found. Regarding his identity, D.S. Khan, in her book Crossing the Threshold: Understanding Religious Identities in South Asia, argues that Ramdevji was an abandoned Ismaili Khowaja of the Shia sect of Islam, which is contrary to the popular belief of Hindus, as they see Baba Ramdevji as the reincarnation of Lord Krishna. The issue will be fully addressed in this research; findings will be focused on the origin and identity of Baba Ramdevji, and will cover all other aspects of the topic, by focusing on his teachings, his path, his influence and their impact on Sindhi Society. Baba Ramdevji’s temple in Tando Allahyar, its traditions, architecture and the customs associated with his personality and the traditions which were introduced by him and later by his followers will be discussed in detail. Particular attention will be paid to the temple of Baba Ramdevji in Tando Allahyar and its influence on the Meghwar community of Sindh. The project will closely examine the topic and shed new light on neglected or rarely acknowledged information and aspects of the issue.
